Barriers to Employment Project

Home Barriers to Employment Project

About this Project

The COVID-19 pandemic had drastic implications for Niagara’s workforce. Niagara saw 13,700 people lose employment between 2019 and 2020. Niagara’s retail and wholesale trade sector, as well as the accommodations and food services sector were home to 11,400 of those employment losses. These are significant changes that coincide with increased pressures on employers to remain in business during the pandemic.

Given these trends, there is a need to better understand the long-term effects of the changes brought on by the pandemic. Approaching this study through both the workforce and employer perspective will prepare Niagara’s workforce for the skills needed in the coming years, as the pandemic increased economic pressure on both labour supply and demand.
