NWPB’s Mentorship Program is all about making impactful connections. This month, our mentorship program coordinator, Josie Faccini, sat down with mentee Impa-Chiquita Bahati to ask her about how the connection she made with her mentor has impacted her professional journey.

Josie: What brought you to NWPB’s mentorship program? What personal goals were you hoping to accomplish through the program?
Impa: My husband Patrick introduced me to the mentorship program. After attending one of the sessions held by NWPB, he was so excited that he encouraged me to go with him to the next session. He was invited to share his testimony as a new immigrant to Canada, coming from the USA. I had no personal goals at first, not knowing what to expect from the program. At the end of the program, I found it very beneficial. It helped me connect with other people and expand my network. I learned more about mentorship and I got interested.

Josie: What skills did your mentor help you develop? What did you learn from your mentor?
Impa: She helped me build confidence during interviews. We still practice a lot of interview techniques and adjust resumes based on the job descriptions. I have learned resilience and to never give up. She pushes me to apply to as many positions as I can. She is my cheerleader!

Josie: What kinds of changes have taken place or begun in your life since you started with the mentorship program?
Impa: I am more confident applying to positions even if the job qualifications are higher than what I have. I am less stressed before an interview day and I learned to network purposefully.

Josie: Would you recommend the mentorship program to others?
Impa: I would definitely recommend the program to others and I hope to be a mentor myself one day as well. I have experienced the benefit of being coached by a wonderful person who has not only the qualifications but the dedication to help someone else. It takes a lot to dedicate time and effort to help a stranger. Not everybody can do that.
